WELCOME TO KUPORO´
The lodge
Kuporo´ in the Harakmbut language (language of those who inhabited the area long ago) means "tree that bears fruit with seed where the birds come to eat" and it is precisely what we expect, that each of our visitors will be fed by the experiences that Kuporo´ and it’s spectacular surroundings have to offer. We hope that these experiences will be spread throughout the world and bear fruit.
Kuporo´ offers comfortable accommodations with excellent services, from where you can explore the surroundings. Kuporo´ is a sustainable property that seeks to preserve the area where it is located.
CUSCO, PERU
Where we're located
Kuporo´ is located in the last jungle enclave of the Cusco region, a corner of exceptional natural wealth just 4.5 hours from the city of Cusco, on the south interoceanic highway, the halfway point on the way to Puerto Maldonado. The route is full of surprises and offers the opportunity to visit several chapels of the Andean Baroque route, such as Andahuaylillas and Marcapata. Observe glacial landscapes crowned by the snowy Ausangate and enjoy living cultures through delightful culinary dishes such as hen soup and cheese of Ocongate while enjoying the colorful costumes of the high altitude communities.
After crossing the Pirhuayani pass (4725 masl/15,502 fasl), the highest point of the route, we begin to descend through a canyon full of changing shades of green, submerging into the cloud forest. At the end of the Andean estuaries, Kuporo´ is the custodian of two kingdoms, that of the mountains and that of the trees.
MEETING POINT OF TWO LARGE ECOSYSTEMS
Surroundings
Kuporo´ is located at the meeting point of two large ecosystems, the steep ecosystem of the cloud forest and the ecosystem of low or plain Amazonian jungle, providing a diverse variety of flora and fauna in its surroundings. Strolling through the various trails of the 24 hectares/59 acres of the property or exploring the more than 1300 hectares/3212 acres of the "intangible zone" we can find anteaters, caiman, martens, tamarin monkeys, deer, tapirs, ocelots, pumas and jaguars, all this while learning about the great variety of orchids and butterflies in the area. Discover medicinal plants and the intimate relationship of unique insects with the plant world.
In only 45 days, a team of ornithologists was able to register around 600 species of birds in the area and calculated that a long-term study could yield up to 1,000 different species.
The experience of observing a mixed flock with pairs of silver-beaked tanagers, blue-necked and hooded mountain tanagers while sitting on the porch of the cabin enjoying a cup of coffee is unique to our lodge. There is a world full of surprises for bird lovers to discover; including going in search of crax along the different trails, listening to the conversation of a couple of macaws that fly over in search of fruits or salts, distinguishing an eagle in flight or exploring the area in search of the infamous cock of the rock.
The lodge sits on the banks above the Arazá River, which rushes down from the high mountains, bringing with it a large amount of nutrients that nourish the life that thrives under its surface. The great diversity of fish have served as support to the communities of its shores since time immemorial; Trout in the high areas, pacos, river croakers, shad, tiger shovel-nose catfish in the warmer areas and in one of its confluences, the mythical golden dorado (river tiger). The experience of floating down the river will give fishing enthusiasts an excellent opportunity to catch and release in the Amazon rainforest.
In addition, the Arazá River is considered by many as one of the best rivers for rafting in Peru, offering an exhilarating adventure in its class III, IV and IV + rapids upstream of the lodge enjoying a paradisiacal landscape, with many waterfalls and a green forest that accompany us throughout the journey. We can also float in calmer and warmer waters for a long stretch downstream, looking for wildlife.
Come learn from the unique diversity of this landscape full of life with its inhabitants and charm, its history and the alternatives we have established to combat the threats to its conservation.
