DAY 1 CUSCO / QUINCEMIL / KUPORO´
Leaving the city on the main southern road, heading towards Lake Titicaca, our first stop will be the village of Andahuaylillas – visit the beautiful church, also renowned as the Sistine Chapel of the Andes, famous for its frescoes. Continue on until reaching the town of Urcos, capital of the Province of Quispicanchis. Passing this urban site we join with the Interoceanic Highway which heads towards Brazil climbing its way up to the highlands with rolling hills and snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Vilcanota, dominated by Mt. Ausangate, the main mountain deity of the Andean inhabitants in Inca and pre-Inca times. Drive over three passes; the highest is Pirhuayani Pass at 4,725m. Stop to try some local cheese or sweet milk. Leaving this marvelous landscape of blue skies, dotted with clouds and its never-ending landscapes of fields and craggy peaks, we begin our descent into the enigmatic cloud forest – a winding road brings us past settlements of alpaca herders to the first village of Marcapata. We can stop here to see the grass roof church. As we slowly descend into the cloud forest, we begin to see a radical change in the vegetation as we drive along the Araza River. Four hours after Urcos we will arrive in the district of Quincemil and at Kuporo´ Lodge, (730m) located on the Araza River just after crossing La Oroya Bridge. We´ll arrive for lunch and check in. In the afternoon we can take a tour of the property to learn about the conservation and agroforestry projects in place. After dinner a choice to view caimans in a small stream behind the lodge or take a night hike. (Vehicle: 4-5 hrs., 220 kms). (Lunch and Dinner)
DAY 2 KUPORO´ LODGE
Today, after a hearty breakfast, we will choose from a variety of options. The first half of the day we can take a hike on the trails around the lodge and end up at the river for a swim. These trails will enable us to get close to the ecosystems of the cloud forest, comprehending the dynamic processes of forest growth and understanding the symbiosis of plants and animals. A chance for close-up encounters with monkeys, birds and insect life – and possibly other mammals. Back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon we can go out for another hike or we can jump in the car and go to the nearby Cock of the Rock nests to try and spot the Peruvian national bird in its natural habitat. In the evening we will return to the lodge to rest and enjoy the surrounding environment. Dinner and overnight. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)
DAY 3 KUPORO´ / QUINCEMIL / PUERTO MALDONADO OR CUSCO
Wake up early to walk along a trail with a chance to view birds and small monkeys. After breakfast we can head to the river for a swim or a walk along the beach.
